How to match a gearbox using the VIN and gearbox code
Two transmissions may look almost identical yet use different ratios, housings, controls or mounting points. A description such as “Volkswagen 2.0 TDI” or the model year alone is therefore not always enough for a safe match.
The best starting point is the 17-character VIN. If you also have the gearbox code from the casing, identification plate or service records, send both. This lets us narrow down the correct variant before the vehicle is dismantled.
Why the vehicle model is not enough
A manufacturer may use several transmissions within one model and production year. Engine version, power output, two- or four-wheel drive, destination market and mid-production changes can all matter. A match should never rely only on a photograph or an advert title.
What to provide for verification
Complete information at the start means a faster, more precise answer. A photo of the marking should be sharp and show its location; one unclear character can indicate a different unit.
