Gearbox failure symptoms: when should you stop driving?
Does jerking always mean gearbox damage?
No. Fluid, controls, clutch, mechatronics, mounts or another system may be involved. Diagnosis is required.
Can I drive with a transmission-fluid leak?
Not safely without checking the source and level. Stop driving if the loss is significant or operation becomes abnormal, and contact a workshop.
Is reading fault codes enough?
It is important, but it does not replace inspection, an operating test and measurements appropriate to that transmission.
What do metal particles in transmission fluid mean?
They may indicate wear or damage inside the unit. The particles alone do not identify the cause or repair scope; have the fluid and transmission inspected.
Can a gearbox fault be diagnosed from its sound?
Not reliably. Note the gear, speed and conditions. If the noise is sudden or metallic, stop driving and ask a workshop what to do next.
How to match a gearbox using the VIN and gearbox code
Where can I find the VIN?
The VIN is shown in the registration documents and on vehicle locations specified by the manufacturer. Enter all 17 characters in the form.
Is the gearbox code alone sufficient?
It often narrows the search considerably, but it should still be checked against the VIN and vehicle specification before fulfilment.
What if the code is unreadable?
Send the VIN, vehicle details and clear gearbox photos. We will tell you which additional markings are required.
How is a gearbox code different from an OEM number?
A gearbox code describes a transmission variant; an OEM number identifies a catalogue part. A number on the casing may refer only to the casting, so send a photo of the complete marking.
Will a gearbox from the same model and year always fit?
No. Engine, drive layout, controls or ancillaries may differ. Compare the VIN, gearbox code and the details of the specific offer before buying.
Remanufactured or used gearbox? What to compare
Is a remanufactured gearbox factory-new?
No. It uses an existing casing that has been dismantled, inspected and repaired to a defined scope. Ask for the work scope and warranty.
Why is the old gearbox returned?
The old unit becomes the basis for another remanufacturing process. Any core deposit and return deadline should be agreed before purchase.
Does a clean casing prove quality?
No. External appearance does not reveal the condition of bearings, gears, synchronisers, seals or controls.
How much more does a remanufactured gearbox cost than a used one?
There is no useful universal price difference. Compare the same configuration and the full cost of the unit, labour, fluid, delivery, deposit and warranty terms.
When should I repair my gearbox instead of replacing it?
After diagnosis, compare the repair scope and price with a compatible ready-to-fit unit. Parts availability, time and the condition of the housing and internal components determine the choice.
